Harm Reduction Works-HRW in response to
the need for a harm reduction-based alternative to abstinence only self-help/mutual aid
groups. This is NOT in opposition to abstinence only groups. Harm Reduction Works-HRW
is really for anyone who wants to know more about harm reduction and how it might help,
for any reason regardless of their using or drinking history. This includes people with long
term abstinence-based recovery who actively participate in other groups such as 12 step.
We say this explicitly because the typical narrative mistakenly places harm reduction in
opposition to abstinence. Harm reduction does not oppose but includes abstinence as
well.
AFRC is a grassroots, peer-run organization comprised of people from across the state united by a common focus on recovery solutions rather than the challenges of addiction. We are committed to providing recovery support and resources to individuals navigating the often challenging road of recovery. Our journey began with the understanding that recovery extends beyond the cessation of substance use. We believe in the power of community, peer recovery support, and a solution-oriented approach.
SMART Recovery, short for Self-Management and Recovery Training, is a type of addiction
recovery program that aims to help people cope and recuperate from all kinds of addiction,
from alcohol abuse to gambling and drug abuse. This program is not the same as
famous 12-step programs used by organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and the
Narcotics Anonymous.
Al-Anon members are people, just like you, who are worried about someone with a drinking problem.
